Biedermier Period (1815-1860)

A Hygens Vienna Regulator Circa 1845

In the time period of approximately 1815 - 1860 the Dachluhr clocks were developed, with their elegant straight-line cases. The introduction of the freedom of trade in Vienna brought with it the environment in which artistic quality handwork blossomed. Particularly in Vienna creative forces within all artistic ranges could unfold, and so also the most beautiful and most valuable Viennese regulators originated, both in the quality of the clockworks and also the expert carpenter work done with the cases. The bright colored Satinbaendern (satin inlaid banding) was introduced. The enameled dial was at first a single piece, and then later split into a two-piece dial. The hands of these early Viennese clocks were very finely made. After 1848, the effects of increasing industrialization was ever more threatening to the handicraft required for the finer, early clocks. Fewer new ideas emerged, and there was much more copying of old styles. Thus developed the next style directions, which we now call Neogothic, Rococo, or Baroque.
