Serpentine (ca.1850-1885)
 |
The
Serpentine clocks differ very clearly from the conventional Biedermier clocks.
The production of the clock cases very often-used only hardwood rather than the
veneered cases that had been used in earlier styles. The pendulums often had
the front piece made from brass, and the back from lead or zinc. The enameled
dial was usually 2-piece, and there were elements of the Alt Deutsch style used.
The Serpentine case, with its false grain finish, was born in this period also.
Walnut, oak and very poor woods were used. The cases often had a red undercoat
and then were stained over in black or brown, giving a streaked effect to hide
the poor wood quality and created this false grain finish.
