This 30 hour Alarm Clock was made by Herr Gustav Becker circa 1886. The clock measures 3.75" at its widest point and is roughly 2.75" deep. So its a nice compact size and can easily be used for traveling, which was its main purpose - i.e. a very early version of the traveling alarm clock. I have owned literally hundreds of Gustav Becker clocks and seen hundreds more, but I have only seen two of these - outside of pictures in the books. The serial number lists the clock as being made circa 1886 and is shown on the back of the clock, as well as on the movement. The movement also has the Gustav Becker Medal D'Or on the right, which represents the Gold Medal he won in the Selesia Trade Exhibition and the Gustav Becker Anchor logo on the left with Freiberg, Schl. (Schlesin) printed underneath it.

The case is made from Brass with a hand painted dial. On the dial, you can see the two hands for the Hour and Minutes. The third hand you see is to set the alarm. The dial has an arrow at the top, which indicates which direction the alarm should be set (CCW). And there is also a Gustav Becker anchor with his initials on either side at the bottom of the dial, just above the "VI". The most amazing aspect of this clock to me, is the fact that it uses a pendulum vice a balance wheel. Also, the pendulum is visible through the back of the clock! That is very rare and the only time I have ever seen a pendulum used in a clock like this. The sides of the clock are flat, so the clock will stay level while running. I have used the alarm while traveling and camping, and it works very well and will definitely wake you up in the morning!

The back of the case has two winding arbors. As you look at the back of the clock, it says "Gesetzl . Geschuetzt" just over another Gustav Becker logo. "Gesetzl . Geschuetzt" in German means that the clock is protected, as in a patent. On top of the Winding arbor on the right, it says "Gehwerk" which means Works in German, so that would be where you wind the clock to make it run. Then on top of the winding arbor on the left, it says "Wecker". Wecker in German means Alarm. So that would be where you wind the alarm. The clock can be run without using the alarm function, if you wish to do so.

This clock is in excellent condition. So, if you were around back in 1886 when this clock was sold, it would look the same back then as it does now. That's how good the condition of this clock is. It is truly a rarity to find a clock in such perfect condition. The clock is all original, is in excellent shape, and in very good running condition. The next time you have to use an alarm clock, it will most certainly astonish the people who see it, as it is small enough to go just about anywhere with you!

I had not even intended to sell this clock, as I wanted it as part of my collection. But I had been asked repeatedly to put it up for sale, so I finally broke down and did it. So this is a rare opportunity to get a clock in such perfect condition for such a good price. In fact, it was difficult trying to determine a fair price for a clock that is in such great condition, but I did my best to list a fair and equitable price - as I always try to do for my customers. Who ever is lucky enough to be able to buy this clock, will have a clock that they will treasure and their heirs will treasure for many, many years to come!

The price for this piece is $450.00.

The pictures are really your best guides and they will certainly say a lot more than the best text. If you have any questions, please ask before bidding, as bidding constitutes your acceptance of having seen the description and pictures, and your agreement with this policy.

Damaged Items:
The incidence of damage in our shipments is very low. However, if your item(s) should arrive damaged, please take the following steps to ensure that we are able to properly help you settle your claim:

1) Send us pictures that show the full extent of the damage to the inside and outside of the packing. Please keep the packing until further notice, as it will need to be inspected by the insurance agency.
CAUTION: If you do not keep your packing materials, your claim will be invalid, as the insurance company needs to see the packing material as proof that the damage occurred.

2) File a damage complaint form at your local Post Office, or through whoever delivered the package to you. The same applies to International orders. Typically, the claim form provides the opportunity to describe what happened to your package, e.g., the damage to the package, the type and condition of the packing material(s), your idea of the reasons for the damage, etc. Once filed, please fax or send us a copy of the report. Our fax number is (806) 214-1019, and our mailing address is; Clocks, Pocket Watches, Etc. P.O. Box 83712 Gaithersburg, MD 20883-3712.

3) Finally, please send us a written quote from a local qualified repair company regarding the repair cost, and the estimated value of the damaged item.

THANKS FOR BIDDING AND GOOD LUCK!!!
