Antique Clocks, Pocket Watches, Etc.

Please contact me before following the price eBay quotes for Shipping, as I may have to ship the clock in 2 or 3 boxes for safety (1 box for the Case, then 1 for the Weight(s) & 1 for the Movement, if necessary - we can discuss this to make sure that we meet your needs. Also, if we ship by eBay methods, the clock will most likely not arrive safely!). Plus eBay quotes are not accurate to properly ship a clock of this nature.

Thanks,

60-day Vienna Regulator Made By Karl Schönberger

Rosewood Case

Key Locking Door!

Circa 1845

Holly Banding On The Case & Gesso On The Door

Double Sided Brass Pendulum Bob

Excellent Running Condition!

Piecrust Bezel

Original Glass!

This 60-day duration clock was made in Vienna (Wien) Austria by Karl Schönberger circa 1845. The case measures a full 53" in length, 14.25" wide at the top, 12.25" wide at the bottom of the door, and 5.75" deep (there are glass panels on the sides of the clock). Shipping dimensions are 41.75" x 14.25" x 5.75" and 20 pounds.

The door measures 32.5" and has "Gesso" on the top and bottom corners of the door. The case was originally made circa 1845 as you can tell by the straight sides of the case and the overall Biedermier style of the case design. However, as was common with many clocks, the family that owned it, decided to "modernize" the clock rather than buy a new one. This habit of modernizing/upgrading clocks to make them look newer was a very common practice and allowed the owner to keep a clock that they liked and make it appear as if it were a newer clock. Many people who could not afford a new clock would do this also. What this owner did, was to change the crown from a Biedermier style crown to a Second Baroque style crown. So they took a clock that was made in the middle of the Biedermier Period, and add a Second Baroque crown to it to give it a "Modern" look. This does not in any way detract from the value or authenticity of the clock, but rather was just the way people dealt with clocks back then, much as we may change the look of our furniture today through paint, etc., to give it a "newer" look.

The pendulum is has a double sided brass bob that measures 6" in diameter. The pendulum rod measures ~29" in length and is in front of an absolutely beautiful rosewood backboard!! You can see the Holly banding surrounding the best part of the Rosewood backboard. The porcelain dial is a two tiered dial with a brass chapter ring insert and a very attractive brass pie crust bezel that measures 7.5" in diameter. The dial is in excellent shape and has no hairlines or cracks at all. The dial also has the signature of the maker and is marked Wien (Vienna, Austria), the city where the clock was made. Also, the door is held shut by a key lock, and comes with the original key to lock the door and the original key to wind the clock (the key has a wooden black handle). This is one of the signs of a truly well made and classic clock. There is also a very interestingly carved finial at the bottom of the clock, just to further accent the beauty and quality of this classic clock!

The time-only sixty-day high quality movement is weight-driven and has a deadbeat escapement. The brass bound weight is 4" long, by 2" in diameter, and weighs 4# 13 ounces. The weight hangs from a very nicely spoked brass pulley. The clock also still retains its original wall adjusters, a porcelain beat scale, and its wooden handled crank and key to lock the door. The mounting for the movement (which sits on a wooden board) are two wooden ramps that are mortised into the case and that the movement slides into - very neat and easy. Be sure to remove the weights first before removing the movement, also the pendulum is fixed to the back of the clock. Lastly, the movement is in excellent running condition. I've had this clock ticking on my wall for several years now, and its always kept good time and attracted a lot of attention from the guests we've had.
