This Tall Case (a.k.a. Grandfather) clock
was made by "Lenzkirch Clock Factory"
in the late 1800's. The Lenzkirch Clock Factory is the oldest clock factory (founded in 1849) in the Black
Forest section of Germany. Lenzkirch is also known world wide for its highly accurate time pieces.
The Lenzkirch clock factory achieved a reputation for making good quality, reliable clocks. The
regulator clocks had a worldwide reputation for their quality and reliability. These came into full
production about 1860.
This clock stands 83 1/4" (almost 7 feet) tall, by 23 1/4" wide at the
top
and 12" deep.
The movement is housed in a very beautiful and rare oak case with lots of brass applications, and has
an open well where the
pendulum swings and where the weights fall.
Because the clock has an open well, you are able to see the newer pendulum
bob, which is a very
attractive "Nature face". The top
of the case has a row of 4 round and 3 pyramidal brass appliques and in each corner surrounding the dial there are
4 brass appliques of a woman
with brass spandrels on either side. The dial
is solid brass with Arabic numbers from 1 to 12 on the Chapter ring. The
weights are also made from
brass. The front of the clock that covers the dial opens and locks with a
key. The panels on the side of
the bonnet, have brass levers that can be swiveled to open the side
ports for easy access
to the back of the movement and the gongs.
Just underneath the bonnet is a pierced piece of Black Forest Oak that has a
scroll effect to it and a large
brass pyramid in the center.
Underneath that is the open well of the clock. On either side of the open well, is a beautifully carved
wooden pillar. In the
very center of the open well, is a beautiful brass engraving of a
woman. The
bottom of the clock
has very attractive woodwork designs too. In the very center is a
panel that also has brass
levers that allow it to open.
The 8-day movement is in very fgood condition and strikes on two very heavily coiled
gongs. The gongs used to be held
in place by a gong holder, which is now missing. The gongs have a very, very deep and resonating sound
that is really quite beautiful!
