Cartel clocks had their origin in France during the 18th century. They were essentially a clock for the boudoir or salon, as they were so decorative. This clock was made by the famous French clock maker Montbeliard Vincenti and won a Silver Medal, which is stamped on the bottom of the movement along with the date the medal was awarded. The stamp says Medaille D' Argent Vincenti 1855 or that a Silver Medal was awarded to M. Vincenti in 1855. The entire case is very attractively decorated with 24 Kt Gilt. Gilt of this age, was applied to a base metal, which I beleive to be brass or spelter in this case, by the mercuric gilding process - also called fire gilding and water gilding. The dial, which is absolutley immaculate, i.e. no hairlines, chips, etc. is marked "ALMCO GALLERIES", which is the location where the clock was originally sold. The dial and the gilt hands are flawless!

The clock measures 29" in length, the dial is 6.5" in diameter, and the total width of the clock is 12.5". The clock hangs from a hook at the back of the circle on the top of the ribbons from which the clock appears to hang. There are also flowers adorning the ribbons. The side of the clock is decoratively fluted and there is a spiral cornucopia filled with a multitude of fruits on either side of the clock. The bottom of the clock is a true work of art. There is a face with Ram's horns that is wreathed in leaves in the center and a bow of rope is beneath that. The face is truly amazing, as you can see in this close up picture. From what I have read, the male face with Ram's horns is the Egyptian God Amon, or the male God of fertility. This only goes to further amplify the meaning of plenty implied by the adornments on this clock! Hanging down from all of this is a grape vine with a multitude of grape leaves and grapes. All in all, it is a marvelous work of art and represents a time of plenty.

You can access the movement from the back of the clock. Once you lift the lever to open the portal to the movement, you can view the movement, the stamp, and the bell upon which the clock strikes.

Whether you buy this clock or not, please take the time to enjoy looking at the breathtaking work of this most uncommon piece of art! The clock is in excellent condition, it is all original, and is not missing any pieces.

Lastly, the clock comes with its own key to wind the clock and to set the time.

The price for this piece is $9,500.00.

Over the years, a tradesman may have made changes to an item, which we may not know about, but we will do our very best to discern these changes and describe the item to you as fairly and accurately as possible. Any item may be returned if the description turns out to be incorrect AND if for this reason the value of this item is significantly lower than the actual purchase price. General Description:
We do our best to research and certify each item, and to give you the best information and portrayal of each item. We also do our very best to ensure accuracy, but errors occasionally do occur because there are so many different craftsmen, periods, makes, etc. We list the different time periods for clocks, condition terminology for clocks & watches, and additional information on our Home Page to give you a better idea of exactly what you are buying. The pictures are really your best guides and they will certainly say a lot more than the best text. If you have any questions, please ask before bidding, as bidding constitutes your acceptance of having seen the description and pictures, and your agreement with this policy.

Damaged Items:
The incidence of damage in our shipments is very low. However, if your item(s) should arrive damaged, please take the following steps to ensure that we are able to properly help you settle your claim:

1) Send us pictures that show the full extent of the damage to the inside and outside of the packing. Please keep the packing until further notice, as it will need to be inspected by the insurance agency.
CAUTION: If you do not keep your packing materials, your claim will be invalid, as the insurance company needs to see the packing material as proof that the damage occurred.

2) File a damage complaint form at your local Post Office, or through whoever delivered the package to you. The same applies to International orders. Typically, the claim form provides the opportunity to describe what happened to your package, e.g., the damage to the package, the type and condition of the packing material(s), your idea of the reasons for the damage, etc. Once filed, please fax or send us a copy of the report. Our fax number is (806) 214-1019, and our mailing address is; Clocks, Pocket Watches, Etc. P.O. Box 83712 Gaithersburg, MD 20883-3712.

3) Finally, please send us a written quote from a local qualified repair company regarding the repair cost, and the estimated value of the damaged item.
