This beautiful brass Ship's Clock was made by the Seth Thomas Co., circa 1910. The case is made of solid Brass
and measures 4" in depth, 6" in diameter for the mid section and then flares out to 7" in diameter for
the front of the door and for the rear flange, where it would mount to the wall. The silvered dial
measures 5.375" in diameter, has Arabic numerals, an independent seconds bit, a lever by the
numeral 9 to advance the Chimes, a "Fast/Slow" regulator by the numeral 12, "Seth Thomas" is printed
just below the center apex for the hands, and finally at the bottom of the dial, just below the numeral
6 is printed "Made In U.S.A.". If you look at the picture of the movement, right where the 9:30
position would be, you will also see a stamp which says "Seth Thomas" and "Made In The U.S.A.".
The Ship's Clock was originally mounted on a wall, but a stand was made so it can sit independently,
where ever you would like to put it. Or if you should so desire, you can unscrew the clock from the
wooden stand, and mount it on a wall. Just make sure that you have a solid surface behind the clock!
The clock has chimes, but not chimes in the usual sense. These chimes actually chime out when the work
shifts begin, then tells you how long you have been on your work shift, and finally when your shift
ends. Work shifts are 4 hours in duration and let's say that your shift starts at 8:00 AM & remember
that the clock chimes once for every half hour that has passed and
twice for ever hour that has passed. So for your work shift from 8:00 AM until Noon, the clock would
initially chime 4 sets of 2 chimes to signal the end of the previous 4 hour shift and the start of your
new shift. Then at 8:30 AM the clock would chime once, signalling that a half hour has passed, at
9:00 it would chime a set of 2 chimes, signalling that an hour has pased, at 9:30
it would chime a set of 2 chimes and then another chime (1 Hr & 30 mins), at 10:00 it would chime
2 sets of 2 chimes (2 Hrs), at 10:30, 2 sets of chimes, a pause and then 1 more chime (2 Hrs & 30
mins), etc. It will continue to do this up until 12 Noon and then it'll chime 4 sets of 2 chimes to
signal the end of your shift and the beginning of the next shift.
That pretty much describes the clock, except to say that it runs for 3 days and 18 hours, or 90 hours
total. The clock is in good running condition and it comes with it's own key. If you should have
any other questions, please let me know.
