The 8-day wooden works clock was made by Seth Thomas circa 1815. Many clocks back then had wooden
works (movements) as we didn't have many metal foundries after the Revolutionary War (the metal was
typically imported from England - and was something else that they could tax us on). The case is Walnut veneer
except for the hand carved eagle on top and the Lion's Claw feet. The hand carved eagle is truly a beautiful piece to
behold! It is richly carved in the form of an American Bald Eagle and truly has a presence about it!!
The hand carved clawed feet on the bottom, bear a resemblance to Lion's feet with leaves on top of them.
There are two half columns running almost the entire length of either side of the clock. The painting
on the bottom of the clock, which depicts a Church and a couple of homes in a pastoral setting, is
reverse painting done on glass. Between the wooden dial and the reverse painted glass, is a mirror,
that has lost a bit of its backing at the bottom. The door is locked by a key. Both the lock and the
key are original to the clock.
The gears are made from wood, most likely Ash, and the movement runs for a full 8 days. The clock
stands 37" tall by 18" wide at the top by 4.75" deep. The hands are steel and the dial is very
attractively painted with dyed milk! The clock is run by two weights, that weigh 8 pounds 12 ounces
for the strike side and 8 pounds 8 ounces for the time side. The clock weighs 16 pounds 7 ounces
without the weights. Finally, the pendulum bob is solid brass.
This is truly a great piece of Americana!
