Foliot
Clocks that were regulated by a Verge & Foliot typically date from the middle
15th century to the early 17th century (1450-1600). Authentic examples of these
early timekeepers are exceptionally rare to come upon these days outside of
major European museum collections. This clock is missing gear cut disk that fits
on the center arbor that is advanced by a pin rotating on the arbor of the
second wheel, the advancing motion is checked and retained by a ratchet type
click spring. A single hand would be fixed to the disk. Many clocks
from the early period have striking and alarm work. The metal frames and wheels
are not cast or machined, but hand chiseled and filed from iron or steel.
If you look carefully at the edges of the metal bars, you will see evidence of
this chiseled effect and also the hand beaten effect of the clockmakers hammer.
