Seth Thomas Wood Works 8-Day Time & Strike
The 8-day wooden works clock was made by Seth Thomas circa 1815. Many clocks back
then had wooden works (movements) as we didn't have many metal foundries after
the Revolutionary War (the metal was typically imported from England - something
else they could tax us on). The case is Walnut veneer except for the handcarved eagle
on top and the claw feet. The painting on the bottom of the clock is reverse painting
done on glass. The gears are made from wood, most likely Ash, and the
movement runs for a full 8 days. The clock stands 37" tall by 18" wide at the
top by 4.75" deep. The hands are steel and the dial is painted with dyed milk!
This is truly a great piece of Americana!
